The East African Community (EAC) was originally founded in 1967, dissolved in 1977, and revived with the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community (the Treaty Establishing EAC) signed in 1999 by Kenya, Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania. Burundi and Rwanda became members in 2007 while South Sudan gained accession in April 2016.
TMEA is a key partner of the EATP and has supported the platform since its inception in 2011. The first project on phase on ‘Enhancing the Competitiveness of the Tourism Sector in the East African Community’ was designed to improve coordination of EAC activities and implementation of commitments aimed at enhancing each EAC Partner State’s tourism competitiveness while mainstreaming regional integration.
The East African Business Council (EABC) is the regional apex body of Private Sector associations and corporates in the East Africa with a single purpose of driving the East African Community integration process through trade and investment. EABC aims to articulate its leadership role in building a vibrant Private Sector ecosystem by fostering excellence and increasing national, regional and global engagement with East African governments, people and business.
For over 20 years EAC-GIZ works to achieve a market-driven, people-centered East African Community integration by strengthening the sustainable economic and social development of the EAC through partnership building, digital innovations, skills development and facilitation.
Based at the EAC Secretariat in Arusha and funded by the German government and the European Union, the EAC-GIZ team brings global expertise to assist the EAC as a partner in its implementation of a common market and customs union.
